Now updated with video clips from the opera (below)
Gentle Giant (Ein sanfter Riese) gets excellent press reviews in Hannover. The reviews below are in German, but Hannoversche Allgemeine said: McNeff's minimalist music for percussion, flute, harp and cello (conducted by Siegmund Weinmeister) subtly and effectively underscores the story of the girl Miranda (Tina Marie Herbert), who lives with her father (Hyun-Joong Kim) in a fishing village. But the shimmering silver lake in front of the door barely produces any fish. Residents blame the peaceful but dumb giant (Gihoon Kim). He is not thanked for saving Miranda from drowning. The father is angry that Miranda now sees a friend in the giant...
The Neue Presse added: The excellent singing, the acting in front of and on the revolving stage (which doubles as a fisherman's house and island) work well together. The music with harp, flute, violoncello, drums, glockenspiel and percussion is lively, modern, melodic, dramatic, stirring, exciting. After 90 minutes with break, there are several minutes of enthusiastic applause. Especially for the beautiful, weird music of the frog orchestra. An experience for everyone. Performances continue in repertoire until June. Click below to go to the Staatsoper Hannover website.
